Dissolved Oxygen
Studying Dissolved Oxygen
Beginning in 2009, a dissolved oxygen monitoring component was added to this program due to annual recurrence of hypoxic conditions off the Oregon coast and the typically high cost associated with monitoring. Working with equipment manufacturers and an underwater housing specialist, we have created a sensor package capable of measuring dissolved oxygen and temperature that can be attached to the inside of traditional Dungeness crab fishing gear. The unit is capable of deployment to 300m and the battery packs will provide measurements for over three months using a 10 minute interval. Operation of the unit is straightforward, requiring only the removal and replacement of a large plastic hex-bolt magnet that trips a magnetic reed-switch.
